“Hello, hello. What’s going on? What’s all this shouting? We’ll have no trouble here.”
So within the space of a week, we have news of another series from my childhood returning to our screens.
On Friday Fox announced that The X-Files is to return for a 10 part series and now, we have confirmation from both Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith that The League of Gentlemen is to return for an anniversary special.
Through a Twitter exchange with filmmaker and League fan Duncan Jones, Gatiss and Shearsmith confirmed the return:
The League of Gentlemen ran for 3 series (1999 to 2002) with a feature length film, The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse, released in 2005.
Since League finished, Steve Pemberton and Shearsmith have continued to delight us with their twisted and dark thoughts with the very brilliant and funny Psychoville (2009 to 2011) and Inside No. 9 (2014 onwards).
Although not connected to The League of Gentlemen universe, Psychoville is very much a natural successor. Inside No. 9 on the other hand gives us a new story each week with a number 9 theme, think League meets Tales from the Crypt. For any fans, I would highly recommend you binge watch both these series!
Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson have persued other writing gigs, most notably for Gatiss is his work with Steve Moffat on the BBC Sherlock series.
I don’t think an official air date has been confirmed but if this is an anniversary special, then it could either be 2017 or 2019 (15 years after it ended or 20 years after it started)… my money is on it being the back end of 2017.
These guys are brilliant and I’m very much looking forward to what the anniversary special brings.
Are we going to see the return of more 90s TV series?
